Core-ing
by Luke Ryu

An innovative route for next generation people, technology, and transportation by reimagining the city block and its cores.

In the near future, the population growth will eventually lead to increase in number of people moving from point A to point B. Existing circulation will not be sufficient especially in the cities. Through exploring new technologies, we are given more chances to create new types of circulations under, on, and above the ground.  To essentially create more options for human movements, the idea is to take on some of the futuristic features to design spaces that could provide various ways for people to choose how they want to move. Also in seek to re-imagine the possibility of future cities, in a manner that does not limit the buildings as towers, but as living and breathing giant organisms. The main function of cores is the vertical circulation of existing plans that would eventually interact with other cores to create new relationship for both people and the structure.

The components of the circulation are direction of the movement, type of use, frequency of use, and time of use. Therefore, as an ideal testing site, a group of parcels in the middle of the Manhattan Valley and the upper west side of the Manhattan was chosen. The site is composed of residential, commercial, and public buildings where various type of people interact within different time zone.
