The project proposes to redevelop Angel Park as a strategy for flooding in Jefferson Chalmers while re-establishing Angel Park as a space for social life to take place in the community.

Redevelop Angel Park as a solution to flooding in Jefferson Chalmers while re-establishing Angel Park as a space for social life to take place in the community. Angel park will bridge the gap between the community and river while addressing key issues in the community such as affordability, access and environmental issues.

First, the affordability of water is a key issue for residents in Detroit and communities such as Jefferson Chalmes because of rising water prices. Although the rising water prices are a result of factors that are beyond a residents control, the burden of cost is placed on their shoulders.

Second, access to clean and drinkable water is a resultant of affordability issues as well as the environmental issues.

Third, environmental issues relating to the combined sewerage system that exists in Detroit. When the neighborhood of Jefferson Chalmers floods, this includes streets, basements and homes. It only takes 3 inches of water for the outfall to come into play which dumps back into the Detroit river destroying our ecosystems.

The project introduces the strategy of designing gathering spaces that can function as an extra layer of protection for the neighborhoods by allowing them to flood and mitigate water. The design strategy being implemented uses a relationship between the built form above and below ground with the ecological environment.
