Shelter is a state of mind, something we make for ourselves wherever we can.

Although shelter represents stability in an unstable world, we're beginning to see that shelter can be how we live, a situation that we create and recreate. Shelter is a state of mind, something we make for ourselves wherever we can. The circumstances for “homelessness” can take various forms and the homeless are often overlooked. Tragically, homeless people suffer disproportionately from most health problems, drug abuse, and addiction. The result of homelessness is often substance abuse, and substance abuse often contributes to homelessness. Connections between homelessness and addiction are unfortunate manifestations of cause and effect. Homelessness is very complex and, many times, generates vicious cycles that are hard to break, but hope is not lost.

This proposal aims to provide shelter/resources at the forefront of the city of Reno, Nevada. This aligns with the city's goal to renovate its image and rely less on gambling, by making a statement that cannot be overlooked. Currently, available outpatient treatment methods include individual counseling, detox, and 12-Step programs. However, outpatient care does not provide housing – a critical factor to the homeless and others. The project aims to provide the homeless, addicts, and substance abusers not only with housing if needed, but with a variety of programs, inspired by the 12-step program, aimed to help a participant regain control of their life. While providing housing is a critical factor, making sure the participant has access to the right resources in and out of the program is also a factor we should consider when providing shelter for these marginalized communities.
